MYFOXNY.COM - Sources tell Fox 5 News that a suspicious substance was found in the mailroom of the Russian consulate in Manhattan early Wednesday morning.
Police said that the substance--white powder--turned out to be harmless, and the incident is likely a hoax similar to the previous five suspicious substances sent to missions and consulates since Monday.
The Permanent Mission Russian Federation is located at 136 East 67th Street. Police were called to the mission at 1:30 a.m.
Fox 5 News Reporter Katherine Creag says the mailroom worker who opened the envelope immediately went to the 19th Police Precinct located near the mission for help.
Investigators and hazmat crews rushed to the scene. No one was injured. Initial tests indicate the powder was harmless.
Missions to the United Kingdom and Germany received suspicious packages on Tuesday. The missions to France, Austria and Uzbekistan were sent similar packages on Monday. Tests found the powder sent on Monday to be flour. Results are not yet available on the powder sent on Tuesday.
