WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - West Springfield police are searching for the mother they allege abandoned her newborn baby at a motel.

Police say they are looking for a Holyoke woman, but did not immediately make the woman's name public. She faces a child abandonment charge.

The baby, umbilical cord still attached, was discovered Saturday in a motel room littered with empty beer cans. A couple staying in the adjacent room found the baby when they heard a weak cry. They found her on the bed in a room littered with beer cans.

Kimberly Dougherty told The Republican newspaper the door was ajar, and when she entered, she found the baby girl lying in the middle of a double bed.

The couple called paramedics and the baby was taken to a hospital.

A spokeswoman for the state Department of Children and Families is seeking custody of the baby.
