BOSTON - The one-time reputed head of the mob in Boston pleaded guilty Wednesday to trying to bribe his way into a Big Dig contract.
Carmen DiNunzio kept quiet on his way into federal court in boston, but inside he admitted to trying to bribe an undercover federal agent who he thought could get him a multi-million dollar Big Dig contract.

As part of his plea agreement, DiNunzio will also plead guilty next week in Essex Superior Court to illegal gaming and extortion charges.
“We did an assessment of all the evidence and came to a decision that it was time to make the best deal we could under the circumstances,” said DiNunzio’s attorney, Anthony Cardinale.
DiNunzio was facing a prison sentence of more than 30 years had he gone to trial, but the plea deal gives him a lighter sentence in a federal lockup, avoiding state prison time.
Asked how DiNunzio was taking the prospect of going to jail, Cardinale said, “He's fine. He’s a man. He understands all the circumstances and he understands that he's going to go to jail for six years.”
FOX Undercover first identified DiNunzio five years ago as the reputed head of the mob in Boston. Even now, DiNunzio's attorney denied knowing anything about DiNunzio’s alleged mob activity.
Asked about how his absence would affect organized crime in the city, Cardinale replied, “I wouldn't have an idea on that score.”
DiNunzio will remain under house arrest for the summer. The judge will sentence him in September.
Meanwhile, DiNunzio is engaged, his attorney confirmed, but the wedding is on hold until after he gets out of prison.
As for Fresh Cheese, the shop that DiNunzio owns in the North End, Cardinale says the business is struggling without the cheeseman there and it may close down.
