SAUGUS, Mass. - A man is dead after he crashed his motorcycle into a utility pole with a female passenger on-board in Saugus, police said.

Police said Francis Pare, 65, of Malden, was operating his 2000 Harley Davidson on Route 1 North near Main Street after noon on Saturday, when he lost control and drove off the road into the utility pole.

The driver was pronounced dead at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. The female passenger, 49-year-old Joanne Vasel, of Revere, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries.

Police are withholding their identities as they notify the families.

Route 1 North was closed for about a half an hour after the crash.
