FALMOUTH, Mass. (FOX25, myfoxboston) - Speed is believed to be a factor in a head-on crash in Falmouth that sent two people to the hospital.

Two drivers were seriously hurt and one of them has been charged after the early Sunday morning wreck, police said.

Police are charging 21-year-old Edmund Lopes III, of East Falmouth, in the crash that sent both him and 17-year-old Clorissa Ann Decosta-Hicks to the hospital.

Police said Decosta-Hicks, of Bourne, was driving a Saturn eastbound on Brick Kiln Road toward Falmouth High School when Lopes’ Taurus crossed the median going the other direction and hit her head on.

Police said the impact pushed the Saturn 20 feet backward. Both vehicles were totaled and had to be towed away.

Decosta-Hicks was taken by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital for serious injuries to her lower body. Lopes was also taken to a Boston hospital.

Police are criminally citing Lopes for excessive speed.

There were no indications of any drug or alcohol use.
