Cops: 2 brothers shot by Boston EMT at Abington house party

A Boston paramedic accused of shooting his deceased colleague's brothers, then using his emergency training to treat them, was ordered held without bail Monday.

Rhys Williams was arraigned on a list of charges, including assault with intent to murder, and was ordered held until a dangerousness hearing Thursday.

Abington police say the 41-year-old Williams went to a party after attending a benefit Saturday night for his former partner Mark Brinkman, who died in May. He was asked to leave the party after an argument, then allegedly returned and shot John Brinkman and Paul Brinkman.

Both survived, but Paul Brinkman remained hospitalized Monday.

A Boston emergency services spokeswoman says Williams, on medical leave since July, has been placed in administrative leave.

It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer. A public telephone listing for Williams could not immediately be found.

Statement from Thomas M. Menino, Mayor Richard Serino, Chief of Department Barbara Ferrer, Executive Director Sophia Dyer, MD, Medical Director:

Boston EMS has learned today that one of its employees has arrested in connection with a shooting incident which took place in the town of Abington over the weekend. Mr. Rhys Williams has been an EMT with Boston EMS since October 2002. Mr. Williams was on "INJURED" leave at the time of the incident, and he has been placed on Administrative leave until further notice. Any further questions about the incident should be referred to the Abington Police Department, or the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office.
