BOSTON - A 5-year-old child has suffered severe burns after her dress caught fire while making s'mores in a South End backyard, firefighters said.

Firefighters said the child walked too close to the flame and her dress lit on fire in the backyard at 9 Bradford Street.

Both parents were in the backyard at the time. The girl's father burned his hands trying to put out the flames.

The girl was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital with third and second degree burns on 30 percent of her body.

Firefighters said the fire pit was illegal.
