HINGHAM - Hingham police say they have a few leads in the search for a man reported missing after his dog was found wandering by itself with its leash on near a Chili's restaurant.

Police say the dog had a microchip in its back which was traced back to a breeder in Nebraska. They found out the dog was then sold to a breeder in West Roxbury that is now out of business.

Police are hoping the clues help them identify the missing man who witnesses say was around 70 years old.

The man was seen walking his St. Bernard about an hour before he was reported missing on Wednesday, and police focused the search on a nearby pond where the dog showed interest. The man was not found, and police are hoping reverse 911 calls will generate tips.

Witnesses describe the man was tall and slim, with white hair.

The dog was taken to an animal shelter.

Police are not ruling out the chance that the dog was abandoned.
