Lowell police have charged a 17-year-old driver in connection with a hit-and-run earlier this week in Lowell that left a young boy seriously injured.
Michelle P. Medeiros, of Methuen, has been charged with hitting 12-year-old Kelvin Savanhmixay, of Lowell, Wednesday afternoon as he walked home from school.
The teenager has been charged with Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident. Police talked to her parents about the crash and then Medeiros then admitted she was involved in the incident. Police then issued the citation. More charges are possible, police said.
Witnesses say two cars that appeared to be drag racing ran a red light before one struck the boy.
Yesterday, police found the vehicle they say hit the boy in the back of a Methuen body shop. The car had front end damage to the bumper, hood and windshield. Police say they are looking into whether there will be charges related to that. They are still searching for the other vehicle.
Sources told FOX25 the car had been the subject of a police report in Lawrence two hours after the crash. A woman told police she had parked the car and walked to a nearby beauty salon. When she returned, she said she found the car vandalized. The vehicle was later seized at a body shop in Metheun.
The accident happened at about 2:36 p.m. Witnesses said one of the drivers involved in the race got out of his car and saw the boy on the ground. After exchanging words with a witness, he got back into his car and drove off.
Police said it appears two cars were trying to beat the light on Riverside Street and Mammoth Road. The boy was walking in the crosswalk when he was hit by a small, “bluish” car and was thrown 20 feet into the median.
The boy is in fair condition at Children's Hospital in Boston with internal and head injuries.
