BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A Boston developer says he will ditch plans to build a pair of skyscrapers near the New England Aquarium unless the city relaxes height restrictions and approves buildings tall enough to make the project economically viable.

Don Chiofaro told The Boston Globe the towers need to be 45 to 50 stories tall to attract investors willing to underwrite the costs of building on the waterfront. He says city officials are considering new height restrictions that would lower his proposed buildings by at least one-third, making them too small to support the expense of construction.

A parking garage currently occupies the land.

City officials say Chiofaro is trying to pressure them into approving a development that has failed to win public support.
