Massachusetts fire departments are receiving $20 million in federal stimulus funds to help avoid layoffs.

Gov. Deval Patrick said he's directing the federal dollars to municipal fire departments across the state that have been struggling with declining numbers of firefighters due to layoffs and attrition.

Patrick said fire departments should also apply before an Aug. 21 deadline for some of the $26 million in public safety funding the state is set to receive through the stimulus act.

Thursday's announcement is on top of the $45 million in stimulus funding already committed to municipal police departments.

A total of $71 million in federal recovery funds have been directed to local public safety officials in Massachusetts.
