Free parking for Sox fans in Brookline could end

BROOKLINE, Mass. (FOX25, myfoxboston) - Red Sox fans who park in Brookline for games at Fenway Park may have to pay up if the transportation board approves a proposed plan.

In past seasons, parking has been free in Brookline. Fans could walk the short distance to the park or hop on the Green Line to Kenmore.

But a new plan would charge fans $10 to park in the spots during Red Sox games. In addition, the normal meter rate of 75 cents per hour, which lasts until 6 p.m., would be extended until 10 p.m.

Jerry Katz, a member of Brookline’s Chamber of Commerce says the goal is to generate more revenue for the town and increase the turnover in parking spots near the St. Mary's T stop, about a half mile away from Fenway.

“The problem is, you see, the meters expire at 6 o'clock, so after 6 you get a free ride. What happens is Beacon Street Tavern, they can't do business, because no one will come down to this area,” he said.

But some business owners worry extending the meters until 10 p.m. will hurt business.

“I am concerned about it because already it is difficult getting customers to our shop,” said Lois Kolgain, owner of Oriental Rug Galleries.

Employees at Temptations Restaurant say the new rates will be a nuisance.

“Parking is always a problem in Brookline anyway. People come in here and get quarters and run out to meter just so they can eat here. It's already a problem,” said Gregory Cotty.

Before it raises rates at about 100 spots closest to Fenway, Brookline will need to install new parking meters that accept credit cards, cash and coins.

The new rates could go into effect as soon as July 1st, but the transportation board still needs to vote to approve the plan.
