HYDE PARK (FOX25, myfoxboston) - The Boston Inspectional Services received a call Monday afternoon requesting assistance with the Boston Police Department, asking for an Inspectional Services inspector to investigate possible condemnation issues at a home located at 1180 Hyde Park Avenue, Hyde Park, a two-family home.
ISD Inspector discovered "deplorable conditions" at an apartment on the second floor of the building at that address, although ISD calls them more like "housekeeping issues," with large amounts of clothing strewn about, and fruit flies and other flies prevalent enough throughout the second floor that the inspector ordered the landlord to hire an exterminator to deal with them immediately. The landlord, identified as Angela Collins, lives on the first floor of the building.
The only health hazard that the ISD inspector identified was the lack of smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, and ordered landlord Collins to immediately have 5 smoke and CO detectors installed and operating -- ISD believes that Collins is purchasing those detectors and installing them tonight. The ISD inspector also ordered that the entire second floor must be cleaned and sanitized, with bleach, the walls and floors of the second floor apartment, that they must wash and sanitize everything and remove whatever they don't need or use. The home was found to have running water and working toilets.
In addition to the Boston Police, the Department of Social Services were called to the home, where children were present, and the Animal Rescue League were called to the location -- they confiscated one out of two dogs. We are awaiting an update from DSS on the status of any children that were in the home.
