Manatee spotted in Dennis

DENNIS (FOX25, myfoxboston) - An apparently lost manatee has been spotted swimming in the waters off the coast of Cape Cod for the second consecutive year.

Dennis Harbor Master Terry Clen says he saw the marine mammal in Sesuit Harbor on Sunday.

Officials are encouraging the public to stay away from the animal and not feed it, because that might delay its return to warmer waters and endanger its life.

A manatee seen in Cape Cod waters last October eventually died due to extended exposure to cold water.

Dennis natural resource officer Paul Wightman told the Cape Cod times this year's visitor looks in much better health and appears to weigh about 1,000 pounds.

Manatees are normally found in the warm water off Florida and Georgia and stop feeding if they get too cold.
