Sex case against Sacred Heart lacrosse players is dropped

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Connecticut authorities have decided not to go forward with the prosecution of three Sacred Heart University lacrosse players who were accused of conspiring to sexually assault a woman in a dorm room, a lawyer for one of the men said Thursday.

A judge dismissed charges Wednesday against 18-year-old Nicholas Travers of Smithtown, New York. Prosecutors said they probably won't pursue charges against 18-year-old Zachari Triner of Marshfield, Massachusetts, and 19-year-old Timothy Sanders of Ashburn, Virginia.

The three men were charged in November with conspiracy to commit first-degree sexual assault . Sanders also was charged with first-degree unlawful restraint.

"Nobody won in this whole case. Everybody involved now can hopefully go back to a somewhat normal college life said," said Triner's father Steve Gangi in an exclusive interview with FOX25's Ted Daniel.

Sanders' attorney, Wayne Keeney, said an investigation showed Travers was not in the room at the time and that the behavior of the other two did not rise to the level of a crime.

The defense said Triner was in the room while Sanders and the woman were being intimate.

"They're in college, and they were stupid, but that's all they were. They didn't do anything sexual to the girl," said Gangi.

Triner admits to entering the room, but denies the charges. He went to Sacret Heart on a lacrosse scholarship and he hopes to be back on the team soon.

"He's a great kid. He's menally tough, and i think the truth came out," said Gangi.
