(FOX25, myfoxboston) - It’s the toughest call superintendents have to make. With all the forecasts pointing to a monster storm, what do you do?
“Calling the school off is not an exact science,” says Tom Kelly, a former longtime superintendent from Marshfield. “In fact, it's a fairly complex issue. Of course, you rely on the weatherman’s report. Of course, you have to consider the safety of the children first and secondly can the staff make it to the school?”
And what if, like today, the storm was a bust during school hours?
Kelly says calling off school 24 hours in advance is even more difficult.
“I believe they made the right decision and made it in the interest of the children,” he said.
Kelly said the parents’ situations are also considered, so superintendents try to call off school as early as possible.
