SOMERVILLE (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - Torrential rains in the Boston area caused flash floods and major traffic problems on Saturday. And while the storm was brief, it may have costs towns like Somerville millions of dollars of damage.
"We are still doing clean-up. There are some electrical and phone line issues not yet resolved," said Deputy Chief Paul Upton of the Somerville Police Department. "We are operating from the East and West district stations. It will likely take a few days to get back to normal."
The Somerville Police Department had to move their operations to two different sub-stations because of flooding on Saturday. 8 police cruisers and 8 police motorcycles were totally destroyed. They are now performing air quality tests to find out when police can move back into the station. They're currently working out of a substation.
Flood waters and raw sewage overtook homes and streets in the days following the storm.
Taza Chocolate's storage facilities were also heavily damaged. They had to build a concrete barrier to keep more water out. Right now, their chocolate production has been halted.
Crews are working to clean up the damage and have everything resolved in the upcoming days.
The Mayor of Somerville is looking into whether or not human error played a part in the extent of flood damage.
