BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - Despite promises to abolish the Suffolk County holiday known as evacuation day, the State House was nearly empty yet again on Wednesday.
Evacuation Day is supposed to honor the evacuation of British troops from Boston, but today it’s a symbol of government waste.
Evacuation Day and Bunker Hill Day are costing taxpayers about $5 million in lost work hours.
Republican lawmakers called a meeting to call for an end to the costly holiday perks.
“If that bill comes to me, I will sign it,” said Gov. Deval Patrick.
