Representative Michael Capuano says Massachusetts voters would make a mistake if they sent Martha Coakley to the U.S. Senate instead of him, because he has a proven progressive political philosophy and a track record of delivering for the state.

Coakley, the state's attorney general, has been leading in polls as the Dec. 8 primary approaches.

He also says rivals Alan Khazei and Stephen Pagliuca "haven't got a clue how to get anything done in Washington."

Khazei, co-founder of the City Year volunteer program, and Boston Celtics co-owner Pagliuca say they would bring fresh voices to Washington. Both say they aren't beholden to lobbyists and political action committees.

The Democrats are vying to replace the late Edward Kennedy. Republicans Scott Brown and Jack E. Robinson are also competing for the seat.
