Thousands of people got a Thanksgiving Day e-mail from the mayor of Manchester, N.H., but instead of holiday well wishes, it was spam. The mayor didn’t send the e-mails, and he now wants to know who hacked into his account.
Hundreds of thousands of e-mails went out from Manchester City Hall.
“We don't know what the extent of this is right now. We do know it's pretty extensive. There were numerous emails that went out,” said Lt. Peter Bartlett from the Manchester police. “Right now, we're looking at the IP address of where this came from and investigating where it's gone.”
Someone hacked into the mayor’s account and all of his contacts, sending spam to more than 650,000 people.
“People who contacted me and said they received one said it was a spam-like e-mail, but didn't get into anymore specifics than that,” Manchester Mayor Frank Guinta said.
The security breach raises concerns over how secure the city’s system is.
“It is very concerning to me. This is the first time this is happened. I was on the only individual targeted, not only because I’m the mayor, but a congressional candidate,” Guinta said.
Guinta doesn’t believe any sensitive information was compromised.
Police are pouring over the e-mails, trying to figure out where they came from.
Anyone with information is asked to call Manchester police.
