BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - Gov. Deval Patrick is laying down a marker on immigration as the governor of Arizona prepares to get a rude reception in Massachusetts.
“As long as I have anything to say about it we're not going to have an Arizona-style law here,” Patrick said.
Immigrant advocates are planning to greet Gov. Jan Brewer with a march and protest at this weekend's National Governor’s Conference in Boston.
They are the latest shots in an escalating national battle over immigration and Arizona’s law, which allows police to question and possibly arrest suspected illegal immigrants.
The possible dust up in Boston comes after the Obama Administration filed suit seeking to overturn Arizona’s law, drawing even more anger from immigrant reformers and from Brewer.
Gov. Deval Patrick, who is promising to veto republican attempts to toughen immigration laws in Massachusetts, is now the uncomfortable position of hosting the governor's meeting at the Sheraton Hotel, but says he's not concerned about potentially embarrassing his Arizona counterpart.
