MA state seal's depiction of Native American described as 'offensive'

BOSTON (FOX25, myfoxboston) - The Massachusetts state seal is being described as horrifically offensive by the State Commission on Indian Affairs, and there is a push to change it.

The seal shows an image of a hand and a sword lying over a Native American. They call it a sign of dominance and they’re pushing legislation to remove it.

The seal has been unchanged since the 1800s. The armored hand represents leadership, and the sword stands for military honor and justice. The Native American was meant to honor our heritage.

The seal appears on the state flag, state letterhead, business cards, the state website and countless other places.

The bill would only require the seal to be changed from this day forward, but it would still cost some money.

The Commission on Indian Affairs did not return calls for comment.
