BOSTON - Just weeks after Scott Brown's surprise U.S. Senate win, the campaign season is kicking off in earnest in Massachusetts.

Tuesday is the first day candidates for statewide, congressional and legislative seats can take out nomination papers.

A series of factors, from voter frustration to Brown's upset victory, is fueling the surge of interest from prospective officeholders.

No fewer than five candidates have said they plan to challenge incumbent Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick. There are also open races for state treasurer and state auditor and at least half the state's members of Congress are fielding challengers.

The state Democratic and Republican parties are ramping up efforts to recruit candidates.

Party primaries will be held Sept. 14. The election is Nov. 2.
