Seizure Warnings for Pet Flea Treatment

There's a warning from the EPA for pet owners surrounding popular flea and tick products. Vets say they're perfectly safe, but only if they're used correctly.

Dr. Melana Martens gives both of her dogs a tick and flea treatment once a month.

"It's really important to read the directions carefully in giving the right dose," she says. "We just want to make sure people are using the product correctly."

The Environmental Protection Agency doesn't have a problem with the flea and tick products, they are worried about the instructions not being clear and the possibility it could cause problems for your pets.

The products are essentially pesticides you are putting on your dog's skin to kill ticks and fleas. Overdosing can give your dog seizures.

"You just get into trouble when you have a really small dog and you are putting a 100 pound dog's dose on a 5 pound Chihuahua."

Companies say they are working with the EPA to make the labels easier to understand and help owners use them safely.
