VANCOUVER - Almost 150 people required hospital treatment overnight as rioters swept through downtown Vancouver following a Canucks loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final.
Vancouver Coastal Health spokeswoman Anna Marie D'Angelo said Thursday two stabbing victims have been admitted and an unidentified man is in critical condition with head injuries after a fall.
Rioting and looting left cars burned, stores in shambles and windows shattered over a roughly ten block radius of the city's main shopping district.
Ten-foot flames were coming from the car as fans dressed in Canucks jerseys milled around taking pictures. Hundreds of people were seen encouraging the rioters to destroy the vehicle before police reportedly used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Very early Thursday morning, Canadian television stations were running pictures of the injured. One was of a man in a Bruins jersey lying on Vancouver's Georgia Street, appearing to be hurt.
Vancouver saw similar riots in 1994 when the Canucks lost in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup to the New York Rangers.
Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson released a statement condemning the behavior.
"Vancouver is a world-class city and it is embarrassing and shameful to see the type of violence and disorder we've seen tonight," Robertson said.
"It is unfortunate that a small number of people intent on criminal activity have turned pockets of the downtown into areas involving destruction of property and confrontations with police."
The crowd in downtown Vancouver was believed to be more than 100,000, but police told CTV News only a small group was responsible for the damage.
