Boston is taking extra steps to make sure it's ready when bad weather strikes. It's one of just a few communities to now be certified “StormReady.”

Boston joined over 1,400 communities nationwide and is the largest city in New England to be recognized as "storm ready,” a designation indicating that Boston is more prepared than ever to face New England’s sometimes stormy weather.

The city is working in partnership with the National Weather Service to educate the public and warn them of impending severe weather.

Boston joins other cities in the northeast, including New York, Worcester and Providence.

Mayor Thomas Menino says the city will work with many different resources, including community emergency response teams, trained weather observers and even a network of weather radios distributed to highly populated areas.

“We want to educate the public on certain things that are dangerous to them that might be in the roadways or might be happening because of a thunderstorm or a snowstorm," he said.

The mayor stressed that efforts to protect residents, workers, and visitors in the city is an on-going and changing task and that new measures to ensure public safety from weather will continue to be put into place.
