(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - Trends come and go, but kids can't go wrong with some of these must-haves in their back-to-school wardrobe this year. Plus, parents will get an "A" – and save money, just by sticking to these top five staples for boys and girls.
MyFox Orlando posted a gallery of some back-to-school fashions.
Girls:
About.com lists jeggings (combination jean and legging) as the number one item a girl should get this season. And if you're not into the jeggings, a skinny jean will do – the skinnier the better.
Pair those jeggings or skinny jeans with a tunic top. Flowing tops are another trend that should be on your list of must-haves, the Los Angeles Times featured in their back-to-school fashion pictorial.
Plaid shirts are also being seen in stores. Wear it with your favorite T-shirt underneath, or cinch a belt around the waist, the Hartford Courant reported.
And no outfit is complete without a perfect pair of shoes. CBS News reports that the ballet flat is still the "go-to" shoe when it comes to keeping up with the style. However, if you're not into flats, boots will keep you fashionable as well. Whether their knee-high or ankle boots, fashion experts are saying go for it.
Girls can't forget accessories either. The aforementioned belt is a wardrobe staple – skinny or fat. And for jewelry, colorful bracelets layered on the wrist will finish off the outfit.
Boys:
Fashion trends sometimes are overlooked for boys. They may not have as many must-haves, but these items will help them start the school year out right.
Jeans are at the top of the list for boys too. Dark denim is the way to go. It's not just for the bottom either; denim shirts and jackets are also seen being worn, CBS News reported.
Boys are also wearing plaid shirts. No bright colors here. Neutral is the way to go.
Layering is a must. Graphic, retro and vintage-looking T-shirts are being worn underneath the plaid shirts.
When the temperatures start to drop, boys will be seen sporting military-style jackets or the always classic peacoat seen in the LA Times .
Forget the traditional backpack, The Courant reported. Messenger bags in different patterns, such as plaid, will help send off boys and girls to brand new school year, feeling confident and complete.
