It's OK To Wear White After Labor Day

(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - Labor Day has come and gone, so you might think you have to bury your favorite white ensembles in the back of the closet ’ but think again.

The "no white after Labor Day rule" was made to be broken, and really, was never a "rule" after all.

The fashion faux pas of wearing white after Labor Day seems to have been around forever. However, this "rule" that so many seem obligated to follow, originated back in the early 20th century when well-to-do Americans would don white during their summer vacations and leave their dark clothing back in the city, according to Time .

People went on to continue that tradition creating this myth of a rule we have today.

There are, however, some guidelines to wearing white after Labor Day so as to not look too summery.

Esquire advises to steer clear of any delicate fabrics. Delicate doesn't go with cold weather; instead, pair a sweater in a shade of white, like ivory or cream, with a darker ensemble.

White jeans are also a must for men any time of year. Just make sure the jeans fit well and tailor them if you have to.

Women can make white look classy, but if you're still unsure of sporting your white duds, try mixing them with fall pieces. Style expert Heather Kenny suggests pairing a white jacket with a dark turtle neck. But if you want to really stand out in a crowd, try a white coat.

If you're still concerned about wearing those white shoes, you have a reason to be. Fashion expert Charla Krupp told Stylist.com , "Don't wear white shoes ’ not even in sneakers. They look nerdy." Krupp says to opt for a nude pair instead and leave the white stockings for the little girls.
