LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kara DioGuardi is stepping down from her role as a judge on "American Idol," U.S. TV network FOX confirmed in a statement issued Friday night.
The news comes after months of speculation the award-winning songwriter, who joined the series during its eighth season, would be leaving.
"I felt like I won the lottery when I joined 'American Idol' two years ago, but I feel like now is the best time to leave 'Idol'," said DioGuardi.
"I am very proud to have been associated with American Idol -- it has truly been an amazing experience."
The show, which is screened on News Corporation's FOX network, which also owns NewsCore, is due to begin screening its 10th season on January 2011.
Fox Broadcasting Company's President of Alternative Entertainment Mike Darnell said DioGuardi would be missed.
"I've been fortunate to get to know her well, and have always been amazed by her eye for talent and her commitment to developing and mentoring artists," Darnell said.
'Idol' creator and executive producer Simon Fuller said Kara was "one of the world's best songwriters."
"I will miss having her on the show, but I look forward to working with her in music for many years to come."
DioGuardi did not reveal her next move, only saying "I look forward to my next challenge."
Her statement comes after founding judge Simon Cowell and comedian Ellen DeGeneres, also announced this year they would leave. This leaves record producer and music manager Randy Jackson as the only remaining judge from last season.
Meanwhile there has been speculation that singer Jennifer Lopez is close to sealing a deal to appear.
