(MYFOX NATIONAL) – Nuns in Montreal, Canada showed an extreme form of forgiveness when they forgave the man who killed their fellow Sister.
Martin Rondeau was found not guilty for the murder of Estelle Lauzon by reason of insanity reports the Montreal Gazette .
Rondeau was arrested in 2007 for beating 80-year-old Lauzon to death according to the Canadian Press . He suffered from epileptic seizures and continued to have seizures upon his arrest leading authorities and medical examiners to determine that his condition was real.
It was determined by Quebec Superior Court Justice Guy Cournoyer that Rondeau suffered from mental health problems caused by an epileptic fit at the time of the attack on Lauzon.
After the verdict was given, Sister Superior Pauline Massicotte said, “We forgave him right away because he is a human being. He’s not evil, he’s not mean. If the Sister were here today, she would have forgiven him.”
In 1996, after a brutal attack and killing of two nuns in Waterville, Maine, the surviving nuns showed their forgiveness by washing the feet of the attacker’s parents according to an NPR report .
Sister Elizabeth Madden put together a washing of the feet ceremony and was moved by seeing one of the survivors, Sister Mary Anna, wash the feet of the attacker’s family.
Madden explained that forgiveness and understanding “extends out, because that sort of forgiveness has an effect; it goes out and out like ripples in the water.”
As for the nuns of Providence Convent in Montreal, they miss their friend but admit that it didn’t take them long to show compassion toward Rondeau and forgive him for what he had done reports the Canadian Press .
Massicotte said, “It was a crisis of faith.”
