Portia Bruner joined FOX 5 Atlanta as a general assignment reporter in July 2003. Since then, she has covered a wide variety of breaking news and spot news including extensive coverage of metro Atlanta's gasoline shortage in 2008 and Georgia's historic flood of 2009.
She has produced a series of in-depth reports focusing on the impact of the recession on the state's workforce and economy. Before joining FOX 5 News, Portia was the consumer reporter for WTKR-TV in Norfolk, Virginia. While at WTKR, one of her stories led to the arrest of scam-artists who were operating fraudulent charities after the September 11th terrorist attacks. Another one of her stories resulted in the removal of lead-tainted children's jewelry from a national discount store. She also produced a popular weekly segment testing home-improvement products sold on TV. Prior to her work in Virginia, Portia was a 5 p.m. co-anchor and a reporter for WAPT-TV in Jackson, Mississippi where she covered crime and politics. Before holding those positions, she researched and produced consumer & investigative news for NBC4-TV in Washington, D.C.
The journalism bug bit during high school when Portia worked as a "proof-reader-turned-reporter" for The Urban Spectrum, a small paper in her hometown of Denver, Colorado. An honors graduate of Howard University, Portia has served as the Vice President of Broadcast for the Atlanta Association of Broadcast Journalists and enjoys mentoring aspiring young journalists.
She and her husband have two young sons and are proud to call South DeKalb county their home.
