One week ago, Middlesex County Sheriff James DiPaola abruptly announced his resignation , just hours before Fox Undercover aired its investigation of the Sheriff. Our investigative team uncovered allegations that sheriff DiPaola was personally profiting from his position.
Then on Monday, the Attorney General's office announced it was stepping in to review the case.
Sheriff DiPaola's tragic death capped a week of critical media attention both here on Fox 25 and in the Boston Globe. Then news broke of the sheriff facing even more scrutiny with the Attorney General's office and the State Ethics Commission looking into allegations against him.
One week ago Friday, Sheriff DiPaola sat down with Fox 25 to discuss allegations against him. The interview was the final piece of a seven-month Fox Undercover investigation in which we discovered the sheriff may have personally profited from his public position.
“I believe we're clearing the air right now. I'm looking you right in the eye and telling you I have never done that and the allegations of me doing that are falsley wrong,” DiPaola said.
A former high-ranking employee made the allegations to us and also under oath in a deposition saying Sheriff DiPaola had a long-standing practice of accepting cash campaign contributions and instead of recording them with the state office of campaign and political finance - as required by law - pocketed the money for himself.
Fox Undercover watched a DiPaola fundraiser back in August held first at a Faneuil Hall bar, then out on a boat in Boston Harbor. Fox Undercover identified 22 of his employees showing up, but there are no records of any of them donating money.
Also last Sunday, The Boston Globe reported Sheriff DiPaola filed paperwork to try and collect his $98,000 a year pension and his $123,000 annual sheriff's salary at the same time. The sheriff then abandoned that idea, announcing his resignation instead.
Then news broke of both the state ethics commission and the attorney general's office looking into allegations against the sheriff.
“I stand by my integrity. I stand by the office of sheriff. I stand by the performance that I do on a daily basis as the sheriff,” DiPaola said.
