Study: Americans not using all of their vacation days

Posted:

A lot of Americans are throwing away their days off, a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll has found.

The poll found that only 57 percent of U.S. workers use up all of the days they're entitled to, compared with 89 percent of workers in France.

So what’s the reasoning behind this? In many parts of the world, paid time off is mandated by law.

Germany is among more than two dozen industrialized countries - from Australia to Slovenia to Japan - that require employers to offer four weeks or more of paid vacation to their workers, according to a 2009 study by the human resources consulting company Mercer.

Finland, Brazil and France are the champs, guaranteeing six weeks of time off.

We talked to Jennifer Fraone from Boston College's Center for Work and Family about the results of the poll. Watch her interview in the above video.
