A local fire chief who spoke out in a FOX Undercover investigation about the fire dangers of pre-fabricated homes was among those recognized by the governor today.
Acushnet Fire Chief Kevin Gallagher received the state Fire Marshal’s Award from Gov. Deval Patrick during the Firefighter of the Year awards ceremony at Faneuil Hall.
Gallagher fought to make these so-called modular homes safer by changing the way they are inspected and built.
“While drafting fire safety codes may not be as dramatic as rescuing people from burning buildings, his work will have significant long term impact on the safety of our citizens and our firefighters,” State Fire Marshall Stephen Coan said.
Gallagher began his fight after responding to a 2008 Acushnet fire that destroyed a modular home within minutes.
After a FOX Undercover story aired earlier this year about the chief's concerns, Massachusetts changed its building code. Those changes are set to take effect early next year.
