Bulger girlfriend granted delay in Boston trial

A federal judge has granted a request from the longtime girlfriend of former Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger to delay the start of her trial next year on charges of helping the mobster elude authorities.

Catherine Greig has pleaded not guilty to a charge of conspiracy to harbor and conceal a fugitive.

Greig's trial had been scheduled to begin April 23. Judge Douglas Woodlock on Wednesday granted a request to move the trial date to May 7. Her lawyer had cited scheduling conflicts.

Greig did not attend the brief hearing.

Bulger, the former leader of the notorious Winter Hill Gang, was a fugitive for more than 16 years until he and Greig were arrested in Santa Monica, Calif., in June. Bulger has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from 19 murders.
