Prosecutors: US mobster Bulger's girlfriend lied

Federal prosecutors say the girlfriend of former Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger should not be released on bail because she lied about her wealth, including a secret bank account "with a substantial balance."

Catherine Greig is charged with conspiracy to harbor a fugitive for helping Bulger evade capture for more than 16 years. Bulger is accused of participating in 19 murders. The pair was caught in California in June.

On Nov. 4, a U.S. magistrate judge said Greig had already shown a willingness to leave home and family when she fled with Bulger in 1995.

Prosecutors argued in court documents filed on Tuesday that Greig's has failed to provide a sworn statement showing her wealth, preventing court officials from determining a forfeiture amount which would assure that she meets bail conditions.
