Hotel towel theft may land Nigerian woman in jail

Posted:

A woman who stole two towels and an iron from a Hilton Hotel was Thursday facing prison after being sentenced in a Nigerian court, according to Nigeria's Daily Trust newspaper.

Bilikisu Dowodu was ordered by the Abuja Magistrate Court to either pay 3,000 Nigerian naira ($19.97) or spend three months in jail for her crimes.

Dowodu was caught by a security guard at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja with the items in her bag as she tried to leave the hotel's gate. She pleaded guilty to possessing the contraband but maintains she did not knowingly steal.

"My friend parked the items in a bag and asked me to help her carry them out of the hotel, promising to come and meet me somewhere later," Dowodu said. "But, on getting to the gate, I was arrested by the security guard after discovering the items in the bag that I was carrying."

She said she attempted to contact the friend after she was arrested, but the other woman refused to take her call and eventually turned her phone off
