Study: Facebook A Gen Y Show-Off Tool

A quarter of Generation Y users of Facebook make status updates to show off according to an Australian study into youth superficiality, The (Sydney) Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

Market research group IPSOS found that a trend toward making updates in exotic locations is becoming easier thanks to social networks being accessible on mobile devices.

The study comes as Australian sky diver Joel Tafe this week claimed an unlikely first, updating his status while plummeting to Earth.

Facebook Australia regional vice president Paul Borrud said more than 150 million people around the world used Facebook on a mobile device.

Meanwhile, web analytics monitor Hitwise has found social network users shy away from asking online friends the mundane, boring and embarrassing questions, instead opting for anonymous search engines.

Last financial year Hitwise found two of the top questions entered on Google were: How do you kiss? And why is the sky blue?
