Firefighters rescued a 23-year-old German tourist Wednesday after a hole he spent hours digging at a beach on Spain's Canary Islands collapsed and buried him up to his head.
The man was buried in the sand on the beach on the island of Tenerife for nearly two hours before firefighters, who were alerted by his girlfriend, were able to free him unharmed, a spokeswoman for Tenerife firefighters said.
"He had built a three-meter [10-foot] deep hole when the sand buried him," she said.
Five vehicles and 15 firefighters were involved in the rescue.
The hole was to be part of a tunnel the man planned to build on the beach.
In July, a 12-year-old Swiss boy died when a tunnel he dug in sand dunes with his two brothers at a beach in northwestern Spain collapsed.
