A pair of North Carolina farmers were left scratching their heads as to how thieves managed to steal 600 pounds of trout from their farm, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported Saturday.
The brazen theft occurred at Sunburst Trout Farm in Canton, N.C., last week, with owner Sally Eason and her husband discovering a lack of fish when they went to harvest the trout on Thursday.
"There should have been around 600 pounds in the [pond], and there was virtually none," Eason said.
Eason said a truck would have been needed to shift so many fish but they would have had to enter the locked facility.
There was no sign of forced entry and the lock was not damaged, she said.
"How they got them out is beyond us," she said.
It appears the thieves must have baited the fish to bring them to the surface and scooped them out.
The Haywood County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft.
