Video: Man Makes Life-Sized R2-D2 Replica

Posted:

Just in time for Halloween, one crafty sci-fi do-it-yourselfer has built the ultimate accessory for any Star Wars fan: A life-sized, motorized and fully controllable R2-D2 replica.

According to LikeCool, the R2-D2 replica is made from a plastic drum and fitted with with LEDs, internal fans and various wired-in motors.

It moves, goes in circles, shakes its head and makes R2-D2's authentic, trademark beeps. Combine this with the detailed exterior, and you have what CIO.com called "the coolest homemade robot ever."

"This would well be the most awesome Halloween costume ever," added I4U News.

Details about the robot are scant. Word of invention spread when someone posted a video of the robot in action on YouTube, where it has received more than 149,000 views.

R2-D2 is a major character of all six Star Wars films, providing comic relief and companionship for Jedi Anakin Skywalker (later known as Darth Vader), Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Luke Skywalker.

No word yet whether the man will soon be building a replica of fellow robot C-3PO, the peevish gold-plated pal who had a bickering, "love-hate" relationship with R2-D2 in various points in the saga.

But expect the replica to be showcased one day at a future Star Wars convention near you.
