
CHICAGO (AP) - The Boston Red Sox activated left-handed reliever Rich Hill from the disabled list and optioned reliever Justin Thomas to Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday.
Hill, who had Tommy John surgery on June 9, 2011, allowed two runs in nine innings in a combined eight rehab appearances for Single-A Greenville, Single-A Salem and Triple-A Pawtucket.
His last appearance came in Boston's 7-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox on June 1, 2011. He walked off the mound holding his left elbow after trying to throw a curveball on a 3-2 pitch to Adam Dunn. He had surgery on June 9.
Hill did not allow a run in nine appearances for the Red Sox during last season.
Thomas allowed four runs in 4 2-3 innings over seven appearances.
