CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Most bank robberies involve a lone robber who simply hands the teller a demand note and walks out of the bank virtually unnoticed. The more violent type of robbery is referred to as a take-over robbery. In these take-overs, the robber enters a bank and draws a weapon, creating a very dangerous and volatile situation.
That was the case on Jan. 23 at the U.S. Bank branch at 3501 East 106th Street, when a man wearing a black ski mask walked into the bank lobby at 2:30 p.m., pulled out a gun, and announced a robbery. He ordered bank employees and a customer to stand against the wall behind the teller line and demanded cash from the bank manager.
After insisting that he not be given any "funny money" as he called it, the robber forced the manager to take cash from each of the teller drawers, including the drive up window, and then told the manager to open the vault.
Unfortunately for the robber, the manager was not able to open the vault. When the robber was told that the vault couldn't be opened, he became very irate. He pulled the slide back on his weapon, pointed it at the manager, and threatened to kill her if she was lying. He then ordered everyone to count to five while he ran out of the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Fortunately no one was hurt, but the desperation this bandit showed has agents concerned about the next time. A take-over robbery can present the worst possible scenario. When you have an individual enter a bank brandishing a firearm, who then confronts frightened customers and vulnerable bank employees, that's a recipe for disaster. There is also the added danger to law enforcement personnel who may arrive on the scene during one his attempted hold-ups. That's why it's extremely important to identify this individual as quickly as possible, and get him off the street.
Here is how the FBI describes this bandit:
He is a Black or Hispanic male.
He's five-six to five feet eight inches tall.
He weighs between 140 and 150 pounds with a thin build.
During the robbery he wore a black hooded sweatshirt, black latex gloves and a black ski mask.
And he was carrying a black handgun.
He is considered armed and dangerous.
If you see him or know who he might be, call police.
