This week I got the long awaited opportunity to go out with Andrea Isom, another great reporter at Fox 2.
Andrea, Rob (photographer) and I went to an outdoor press conference for the new Adopt-a-park program. The fact that it was outdoors made it very different from most press conferences but it was refreshing and the way the sun crept through the trees brought a sense of hope and change for the city of Detroit. Mayor Bing and many other speakers like congress members and pastors spoke on behalf of it and encouraged everyone to get with the program. The Adopt-a-park program is from the faith-based community, business community and local community. It is a 60 day plan to clean up Detroit parks. There have been a lot of problems lately with the parks having long grass, trash everywhere and little to no sturdy playground equipment. I think this is a great move for the Motor city and I am excited about it. It may be too soon to speak but I think it's important to stay optimistic.
After the press conference, I watched Andrea in action and she sure is fantastic at what she does. She is professional but also able to relate to people and get the best story. I was surrounded by a lot of big names in the Detroit area and I felt honored to be there. After Andrea interviewed a few Detroiters and Rob got footage of children playing on the swings at the park, we traveled to the heart of Detroit for a live interview with Mayor Bing for the 6 pm show. The interview went well and I was able to see how it was conducted which was very interesting to watch.
After the interview, I was able to shoot a stand up for my resume tape. I'm not only getting experience from this internship but I will also be able to create my own resume tape. A resume tape includes all kind of video of you doing special reports and really shows that you are capable of being a reporter. Andrea and Rob were very helpful and coached me through it so it could be the best for my tape. I was then able to watch how Andrea creates her packages for the 10 pm show.
I am so grateful to Fox 2 and Sean Lee for letting me go out with the reporters to see the different techniques. I have shadowed Deena Centofanti Alexis Wiley Taryn Asher and Andrea Isom . All of them are extremely talented and have helped teach me different things. I have grown as an individual who wants to become a great reporter and I never want this internship to end. Thanks for reading.
Question of the Week: What do you think of the Adopt-a-park program?
