DUXBURY (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) A suspect found hiding in a cranberry bog after an alleged home invasion in Duxbury was arraigned on Tuesday.
Brett Roderick, 19, is accused of knocking on the door of an off-duty police officer on Deerpath Trail North around 10:30 p.m. on Monday. When the officer came to the door, the suspect, allegedly Roderick, was masked and holding a gun. The officer then slammed the door shut and the suspect fled on foot.
When police arrived at the scene, they spotted the suspect on Temple Street. He then ran into a yard and into the woods. Police say he fired several shots at them. No one was hurt.
Roderick was taken into custody after state troopers saw him exiting a cranberry bog around 2 a.m. on Tuesday. A handgun and holster were recovered along Route 3. Police are investigating if this attempted break-in was random or if the off-duty officer was targeted.
Roderick allegedly told his mother he was visiting a friend, but the friend wasn't home so he walked around the neighborhood as he waited for him to arrive home. Roderick claims that is when the police began following him.
Police say Roderick was previously charged as an adult for an armed robbery situation in Oklahoma that happened when he was 16. Roderick's mother tells FOX 25 his friend had a b.b. gun and that her son just happened to be there.
Roderick is being held until a May 25 court appearance.
