Police: Teen Fatally Shot by Elderly Grandmother in West Bloomfield

Posted: Updated:
WJBK Fox 2 -

"The neighbors were calling saying they heard shots fired. Our officers responded and when they got there they found a 17-year-old victim with gunshot wounds and a 74-year-old woman, who they took into custody," said West Bloomfield Police Lieutenant Tim Diamond.

That 74-year-old suspect, accused of shooting and killing her 17-year-old grandson is expected to be arraigned this week. The victim, Jonathan Hoffman, was living with his grandparents in West Bloomfield. Police had been called to the condo before.

The woman is in custody after being checked out at a local hospital. Police tell us the grandmother is refusing to cooperate. She lives in a West Bloomfield condominium complex with her 86-year-old husband. Neighbors say the grandson moved in just six months ago, but police believe they had a volatile relationship. They responded to another domestic call between the two back in March.

The 17-year-old was pronounced dead at Botsford Hospital. He lived just long enough to make his own 911 call for help.

"He indicated to our dispatcher that he had been shot, and there was a conversation between the two of them until the paramedics arrived."

"He was a good person. He was a great friend. He was always there for me if I had any problems, but honestly like I'm shocked," a teen told us.
