As if having one bomb wasn't enough, police say a man was using a house to hide more bombs and weapons.
It's like a bad case of déjà vu. The bomb squad was back in a neighborhood on Detroit's east side Friday just a day later.
You might remember Thursday, Detroit police arrested a 48-year-old man. A house that belonged to his parents is now owned by the bank. When bank employees came out to take pictures of the house, he allegedly came out with a gun and a live pipe bomb. The Detroit Bomb Squad searched the house and confiscated a bomb.
"Once he was taken into custody and the investigators got to talking to him, a young lady stepped forward and stated to us that he had been staying upstairs in her home and she had some concern that he probably had some material up there," said Inspector Don Johnson.
The bomb squad searched her house right next door. They discovered two more live pipe bombs, material on how to make explosives and a number of weapons.
"We're going to probably be out here all day long just making sure that we've covered everything inside those locations," Johnson explained.
"You never really know what goes on at someone's home, but like I said, I had no idea it was to this magnitude," said neighbor Allen Beal. "He speaks to everyone in the neighborhood. Everyone knows him."
The bomb squad finished searching both homes and it appears they found all the weapons.
"We're just lucky and fortunate that they didn't go off and cause any harm to anybody," said Johnson.
The suspect is still in police custody, and now that police have found more weapons, he could be charged federally.
