After months and months of deciding, the decision is in and a judge said physical barriers between trainers and killer whales are a viable way to prevent hazards to workers at SeaWorld parks. Judge Ken Welsch said in a decision obtained Wednesday that the federal job safety agency's recommendation that SeaWorld use the barriers to protect trainers working with killer whales was "feasible."
However, SeaWorld may be a little upset with the decision. In the past, the company has opposed taking such action.
The judge issued the decision in response to Sea World Orlando's appeal of two citations issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for the death of trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010. Even with the judgment, there was a slight victory for the theme park.
The judge reduced OSHA's fine against SeaWorld Orlando from $75,000 to $12,000.
