MIDDLEBORO (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - Many first graders are learning how to read and write, but a 6-year-old Middleboro boy is well beyond his years. He used a highlighter and finger painting paper to dismiss himself from school without his parents' knowledge prompting the superintendent to change the entire dismissal policy.
Gannon Farley told his teacher that his mom wrote him a note that he was supposed to go home instead of going to the after school program.
Since there was no signature on the note, the teacher sent him to the office and the secretary left a voicemail message for Gannon's mother Amy Nay. She then let him get on the bus without speaking to a parent.
Gannon's mother did not realize her son was not at his program until she received a text saying he wasn't there. She began frantically calling everyone on the dismissal list, but no one knew where Gannon was for hours.
She finally found him at home.
After several meetings with school officials over the course of five months, Nay could not understand why the secretary was allowed to keep her job at Burland Elementary School.
The superintendent told FOX 25 that the matter was taken very seriously and that he disciplined the secretary in question.
