Time for the Detroit Tigers to Close the Deal in the American League Central

Posted: Updated:

Ok, I'll say it and then you're welcome to disagree. Our forefathers did fight for your right to be wrong. Barring a wave of injuries and only an unprecedented wave of injuries, the AL Central is over. Done. Finished. As of last night, with the Tigers winning and gaining another game on the White Sox and Indians, this thing is done.

If the Tigers blow this lead, then Mike Ilitch should clean house. Period. I am not rooting for anyone to be canned and never will. I am saying that heads should roll if his team blows this lead with two months left. Two months? Dan, are you nuts? You just said it, there are two months left. Don't care. For a long time this race has been as much about what the Tigers are, as it was about what the others aren't. The Tigers are better than Cleveland and better than the talented but under achieving bunch in Chicago. As for the Twins, I've dismissed them as not being able to get out of their own way until further notice.

When you consider the state of the Indians (talented, but young and not ready to close the deal) and the White Sox (probably in need of a new voice) the Tigers are the only choice. They have arguably the best pitcher in the game and the best hitter in the game. Their closer is perfect on the year. V-Mart, Boesch, Peralta, hopefully a solid finish from Avila and whatever else they get will provide plenty of offense. Their pitchers behind JV should be able to cobble enough wins together to easily win this division by at least five games and I would bet it ends up being more.

Hear me clearly. This is not a great team. HOWEVER, they are by comparison the best team in this division. Enough with the second half collapses. Enough of worrying about what the Tigers don't have. I see what they do have. It is clearly enough to do the job. Get it done or lose your job trying. You sign up for that when you get a gig in the Majors. Period.

Patience is a virtue. It does have its limits though.

See you in October boys.
